How to Learn French?

Having knowledge and command over more than one language is a common practice amongst individuals today. Learning different languages gives you knowledge and insight about the different cultures across the globe. Amongst all languages, French is the third most common language used throughout the world, with the number of people speaking in French exceeding two hundred million. This is because there are a total of sixty-eight states within the five continents where French is spoken as a national language. Furthermore, the French language provides a good base for other languages to be learned, namely,Italian, Spanish, Romanian and Portuguese.

Usually, individuals opting to learn French often look for answers to the basic question: how can I learn French? It is important to realize here that French is not such a difficult language for an English speaker, as both languages share common words origin. 30% of English words are indeed derived from french vocabulary. Therefore, learning French is not an exhaustive task. You just need proper guidance and assistance from the professional language training institutes to be able to excel at various different languages.

Prior to opting for a language training program, you need to make some preparation on your part. Buy yourself an English-to-French dictionary and look for common words or phrases you use in your daily life. Keep yourself exposed to the French language; listen to French music, watch French TV channels, read in French that would enhance your vocabulary, converse in French with people who are native or near-native speakers, etc. By doing all this, you will get a hold on basic French and then for further learning you can enroll into a language training program.

There are various techniques that you can use to learn French language. Regardless of the technique you opt for, there are four common components to excel at it completely: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. A typical language training program will focus entirely on these four components and provide training accordingly.

There are various language training institutes you can enroll in for learning French or any other language. It is important to note here, however, that the basic learning techniques that are used by these institutes help individuals in memorizing information rather than retaining it. To be able to retain the information you gather from these institutes, you should apply the knowledge in your daily life.

One way you can do that is by looking for the French words for the items of your daily use, with help of a French dictionary, for example. Learning a different international language can be an extensive procedure and may even require months, so an individual should be willing to invest his time and energy and should remain patient throughout the procedure.

If a language training institute is not accessible by someone looking for language training programs due to whatever reasons, he or she can make use of the internet for this purpose. There are various software programs over the internet that can assist people in learning French or any other language. Audio tapes can also be used for this purpose.

To be able to learn and retain languages, the application of the knowledge gained is essential. Interact with people who excel at speaking the respecting language and seek feedback from them. After all, learning French is as easy as learning to be a Galway Driving Instructor!

Always start from basics.

A language is more than a bunch of words and rules for how to put those words together; it is another world. Speaking French gives you access to the world of over 75 million native speakers in France, Belgium and Luxembourg, and 263 million people around the rest of the world who speak it as a second language – most of them in West Africa.

French is considered one of the easiest languages for a native English speaker to learn. The grammar and sentence structure are different from English, but simpler. Because both languages have Latin roots, they also share thousands of cognates – words that sound the same and have the same meanings.

Consider this sentence in French – made up almost entirely of French-English cognates: L’ancien restaurant est à proximité du musée d’art. The cognates for “restaurant”, “museum” and “art” are virtually unchanged. Stretch your brain a bit and you might notice that ancien looks like “ancient” and proximité looks a lot like “proximity”; the simpler alternatives to these words are “old” and “near”. Put it all together and you get: The old restaurant is near the art museum.
